Marilyn Courtot - Children's Literature

While playing catch in the yard, Brother and Sister find a baby chipmunk. It appears to have been abandoned by its mother, so the bears decide to raise the critter. As the chipmunk grows, it gets into plenty of mischief. Finally Mama and Papa decide that the chipmunk should be set free. It is a wild animal and should be with its own kind. This chipmunk seemed to have no trouble adjusting to life in the wild, but realistically that is not usually the case. Since this chipmunk was hand fed and used to living indoors, it is unlikely that it would make the adjustments required to survive in the wild. Chipmunks have sharp teeth and would not make good pets for young kids. This is a Level 1 beginning reader that features simple sentences for eager new readers. It is part of the "An I Can Read Book" series. 2005, HarperCollins, Ages 4 to 8.
