TCP/IP Illustrated: v. 3: TCP for Transactions, HTTP, NNTP and the Unix Domain Protocols (Addison-Wesley Professional Computing Series)

Author(s)

Praised by reviewers and practicing TCP/IP programmers alike, the TCP/IP Illustrated series examines the many facets of the TCP/IP protocol suite using a unique and highly-effective visual approach that describes the inner workings of TCP/IP with detail, insight, and clarity.

Volume 3 provides detailed coverage of four essential topics with which today's TCP/IP programmers and network administrators must be thoroughly familiar:

  • T/TCP (TCP for Transactions), an extension to TCP that makes client-server transactions faster, more efficient, and more reliable;
  • HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol), the foundation for the rapidly expanding World Wide Web;
  • NNTP (the Network News Transfer Protocol), the basis for the Usenet news system; and
  • UNIX Domain Protocols, a set of protocols used heavily in UNIX implementations.

As in the previous two volumes, the book is filled with examples and implementation details within the 4.4BSD-Lite networking code.

The TCP/IP Illustrated series provides a complete picture of the protocol suite that drives the Internet, and gives programmers, system administrators, and serious users the information, understanding, and skills they need to remain at the forefront of networking technology.

The third volume of the enormously popular TCP/IP serices is a logical continuation and extension of the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) suite which began with, TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 1 : The Protocols (reviewed in our Spring '94 New Book Bulletin). This was followed by the analysis and exposition for the kernel implementation of the 4.4 BSD-Lite release of TCP/IP in, TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 2 : The Implementation (reviewed in our Spring '95 New Book Bulletin). Volume 3 is subtitled TCP for Transactions, HTTP, NNTP, and the UNIX Domain Protocols. Discusses the transaction extension to TCP (T/TCP) incorporated in the client-server paradigm (socket layer, routing table, control blocks, I/O, functions and requests). Explains TCP/IP applications, specifically the Hypertext Transfer Protocol or HTTP of the World Wide Web along with NNTP, the Network News Transfer Protocol. Appendixes contain measuring specs and coding applications. Source code is 4.4 BSD-Lite. There are forward and backward references to prior volumes (the volumes are logically interconnected). These three volumes are definitely recommended as texts and references. The UNIX 4.4 BSD references and programming guides as well as the 4.4 BSD-Lite CD Companion were reviewed in our Fall '94 New Book Bulletin and are available.
