This second edition paperback text looks specifically at injuries as they relate to and are associated with running. The first edition was published in 1990. Changes made in the second edition include expansion of the discussion on injury prevention as well as the addition of a discussion on factors that predispose to injury. The purpose is to provide a guide to runners on the prevention and treatment of running-related injuries. With the popularity of running as both a competitive and recreational sport, these are worthy objectives. The book is meant for runners of all levels and is also appropriate for running coaches and other individuals who are involved with runners or with athletes participating in sports that require running. The authors are not only well-known authorities on running injuries, but are accomplished runners themselves. Illustrations and photographs are of good quality and add to the text, The book is adequately indexed. The authors use of interviews from elite runners and subsequent discussion of the injuries of those runners is an interesting feature. This 176-page paperback should prove very helpful to runners and coaches of all levels. Although the information is very good, the presentation makes it less appropriate for healthcare professionals. The information in this book will help runners understand their injuries better but should not take the place of injury evaluation by appropriate healthcare providers. This book would be appropriate for personal purchase.
