Reading in Context
Beverley Payne
Reading in Context develops academic reading skills and helps students improve word recognition and comprehension in context. The book consists of eight units, each of which focuses on one reading skill and a set of targeted vocabulary. Units are built around three themed readings, each followed by post-reading activities that provide students with opportunities to practise the skills and strategies taught in the unit. The readings relate to a specific post-secondary academic discipline and have a Canadian, academic, or professional context. Each unit ends with the Critical Thinking and Synthesis section where students are asked to bring together ideas from all three readings in the unit. Deeper reading and evaluation are required to achieve this synthesis of ideas, skills which are essential to future academic success.
