Painting and Our Inner World: The Psychology of Image Making (The Springer Series in Adult Development and Aging)

Author(s)

This volume presents the results of a study on how painting expresses the artist's psychology. Machotka (UC-Santa Cruz) examined images produced by a broad sample of students and grouped the images into seven types using cluster analysis. The personality of each student was also studied in a long clinical interview. It was discovered that the style of the images—such as their inhibited formality, abstractness, or fluid boldness—reflected much of each participant's interior world.
