New Perspectives on China's Past: Twentieth-Century Chinese Archaeology
This richly illustrated book is the first to introduce and discuss the most important archaeological discoveries in China during the entire twentieth century. The two-volume set draws on Chinese archaeological fieldwork to address cross-disciplinary topics in archaeology, art history, epigraphy, history, and religion. Chinese archaeology has provided materials that are prompting scholars to reconstruct or rewrite China's history from the prehistoric period through the Imperial dynasties. New Perspectives on China's Past is a compendium of this breakthrough research and the global scholarship that surrounds it. With some six hundred illustrations, glossary, index, and extensive bibliography, this work will be a standard reference on Chinese archaeology in the twentieth century.

Library Journal
This handsome boxed set follows Yang's well-received exhibition catalog, The Golden Age of Chinese Archaeology. Curator of Chinese art at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, MO, Yang has assembled a scholarly survey of 20th-century Chinese archaeology that will appeal to both scholars and nonspecialists owing to its accessible text, exquisite color illustrations, and site plans. Volume 1, Cultures and Civilizations Reconsidered, consists of four sections: Prehistoric China, Bronze Age China, Chu and Other Southern Cultures, and Early Imperial China, including 22 articles by international scholars on specific topics in the art and archaeology of those periods. Volume 2, Major Archaeological Discoveries in Twentieth-Century China, is similarly organized into four sections-Prehistoric China, Bronze Age China, Early Imperial China, and Late Imperial China-and contains 544 richly illustrated entries, each presenting a specific archaeological site. An index and a bibliography common to both volumes is included. This unique and splendid resource, providing English-language access to Chinese scholarship, would be a valuable addition to public and academic libraries.-Edward K. Werner, St. Lucie Cty. Lib.
