Momentum: Developing Reading Skills
Barbara Lindsey Sosna

The 24 readings in MOMENTUM emphasize four major Content Areas: Health Care, Energy and the Environment, Food Supply, and Business and Computers. Because there are six readings in each content area, students have the opportunity to increase their vocabulary naturally through the repetition of concepts.
MOMENTUM is intended to give young adult and college-level ESL/EFL students the opportunity to read English with increasing comprehension and reading rate. Initial readings use only basic tenses and sentence structure, and a vocabulary of 1,000 words. More complex patterns of the language are introduced gradually in subsequent readings.
MOMENTUM is especially useful for those students who must prepare for TOEFL-type tests with timed reading components. With the materials in MOMENTUM, students can expect an increase in reading rate from under 50 words per minute to at least 100 words per minute. THE READING RATE AND COMPREHENSION CHART on page 182 enables students to see their progress immediately as they graph their reading rates and comprehension scores.MOMENTUM's exercises stress reading skills: deciding the main idea, recalling main points, understanding new words in context, understanding sequence, finding specific information by scanning, and making conclusions and inferences. Many of the readings can be used to generate writing assignments appropriate to the student's level.
MOMENTUM includes four review sections that cover vocabulary in context as well as general concepts from the readings. The text also includes a sample exam, a list of prefixes and word roots, and a list of common suffixes.
