Broadly agreeing that current methods of studying the effectiveness of nonprofit organizations and the sector as a whole are less than satisfactory, if not practically nonexistent, 16 papers, presented by Flynn (Flynn Research) and Hodgkinson (Georgetown Public Policy Institute) collectively chart a road toward accurate qualitative and quantitative research methods. The contributors were drawn from a range of fields and bring a number of different perspectives to the project, with some even arguing that it is impossible to fully measure the impact of nonprofits. Early chapters consider methodological concerns and broad theoretical issues while later chapters focus on subsectors such as philanthropy, public education, health care, the arts, human services, and religious institutions.
