In particular, the emergence of magnetic film media and film heads is discussed from the point of view of new materials and designs. Progress in understanding the magnetic domain structures of heads and media, and new methods for their observation are presented. Recent advances in rigid and flexible disks, and magnetic tapes for computer storage and video recording are discussed, along with new work on magnetoptical disks for storage applications. Finally, a chapter on error control coding has been expanded to cover on-the-fly decoding for multiple byte-errors.
