Crisis Intervention and Trauma: New Approaches to Evidence-Based Practice (Issues in the Practice of Psychology)
Hillman, Jennifer L.
Intending her text to serve the purposes of both novice and experienced mental health professionals, Hillman (Pennsylvania State U.) examines the practice and theory of dealing with crisis intervention and trauma counseling in the context of the average practitioner in the clinical setting. She presents information supported by clinical and social psychologists and describes a step- by-step process for working with patients in crisis. She then devotes separate chapters to methods of dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder, long-term effects of trauma, suicidal patients, and suicidal patients. Further chapters discuss underserved populations and future trends. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Description:This book focuses on crisis intervention, integrating recent research findings into theory and practice.
Purpose:According to the author, the book is designed to serve three purposes: to alert mental health professionals to theoretical and practical issues in crisis intervention and trauma counseling; to be a resource for both neophytes and seasoned professionals; to draw attention to the experience of those in crisis, especially in the aftermath of large scale tragedies such as 9-11. These are very worthy objectives that the book meets.
Audience:According to the author, the target audience is psychologists, social workers, and therapists, as well as practitioners in allied professional fields such as nursing, criminal justice, pastoral care, and education. I agree that the book is applicable to a wide range of individuals in many of the helping professions. The author is a credible authority in the field.
Features:The book covers theory and practice, especially concerned with new approaches which are evidence-based. Topics include PTSD, patient suicide and violence, workplace and school violence, and death and dying. The book also addresses helping therapists deal with burnout. The book is good because it covers a wide spectrum of crisis situations. It is very practical and gives helpful insights.
Assessment:This book addresses many important topics in a very readable fashion supported by recent research studies. I especially liked the chapters on patient suicide and violence because both myths and truths are discussed. This is knowledge that all clinicians should have. All in all, this is an excellent book that won't disappoint.
